APEX CHAMPIONS LEAGUE 2000/2001

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL, 2nd Leg

SPORTING CLUB COMBER 2 TUDOR UTD 0
Although Tudor made it difficult, the home side eventually ran out 2-0 winners to lift the Apex Champions League trophy for P43; a fitting finale for manager Neal Comber, as he hands over the management reigns to the mystery newcomer who will have a lot to emulate.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL, 1st Leg

TUDOR UTD 1 SPORTING CLUB COMBER 0
A 63rd minute goal from John Arnold gave Tudor a narrow 1-0 win over Sporting in a tight game at Tudor Road. The P31 side just about did enough to deserve their victory over their P43 opponents after coming on strong in the second half. Sporting had their moments, though, and could easily have taken the lead in the first half when an angled shot from Mario Silva crashed against the crossbar with the Tudor keeper well beaten. So now it's off to Sporting's ground for the 2nd Leg with everything to play for, but perhaps the lack of an away goal for Sporting has tilted the tie narrowly in Tudor's favour....we shall see!

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINALS, 2nd Legs

TUDOR UTD 1 GOLDEN BOYS 0 [Agg: 2-2, Tudor win on away goals)
SPORTING CLUB COMBER 2 BYRON PARK 2 [Agg: 4-3)
How disappointing for Golden Boys! Knocked out at the Semi-Finals stage on the away goals rule! Both teams played identical tactics, but Tudor's goal in the 58th minute was enough to put them through to the Champions League Final.
The game between Sporting Club Comber and Byron Park was just as tight with both teams going all-out attack, but it was the P43 team that got through thanks to their 1st Leg win.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI FINALS, 1st Legs

GOLDEN BOYS  2 - 1   TUDOR UNITED
Golden Boys have done what Extrusioneers couldn't - but how crucial could Pongo's Waring's 41st minute strike prove to be? In all fairness, the P11 side fully deserved this win. Rebe Stamos (scorer of both GB's goals), was a constant threat through-out the game and his tally of 11 goals puts him head and shoulders above any striker in the competition. Tudor won't be too disappointed with this result, after all it's only half-way. What will be on the mind of manager Colin Johnson is how to replace the injured Ron Streat and Scott Yates for the return leg at Tudor Road.

BYRON PARK FC   1 - 2   SPORTING CLUB COMBER
Apart from thrashing Cascarino's Gunners a few rounds back, we really haven't seen the best from Byron Park in this season's Champions League! And now the competition is heating up, the Park are finding it increasingly difficult to keep up. Two early goals (J McAteer 7, M Silva 18) stunned the home side and although they had plenty of time to get back into the match, they could only find one goal in reply through Mirjana Lucic - joint top scorer on 4 which says it all really! SCC are surely too experienced to let this one slip? But stranger things have happened, remember Cascarino's 1 Byron Park 5?

QUARTER FINAL, 2nd Legs

GOLDEN BOYS  3 - 0  MOD ATHLETIC   [Agg: 4 - 1]
P27 / P11's Golden Boys are through to the last four - despite the fact that their manager couldn't pick his tactics right! (Even the best make mistakes it seems). No mistakes on the pitch though, as the Golden team continued to wow and delight their home fans - they really have been an unstoppable force at Vicarage Road - unlike Watford, just kidding! Well done MOD by the way, an excellent run and certainly a team that won't be taken lightly next year - they'll be back! Onward Golden Boys....

EXTRUSIONEERS  1 - 1  TUDOR UNITED   [Agg: 1 - 3]
You see P8 - Extrusioneers CAN be beat! Scratching our heads looking at Tudor's teamsheet it does make us wonder why this team hardly ever defend. Indeed their manager, Colin Johnson, has come unstuck in many an away game with DPD (P46) with similar attacking styles. It takes a bold manager to stick to his guns, and Tudor ARE that good to be comfortable in any formation! Golden Boys vs Tudor is going to be very interesting indeed.

BYRON PARK FC  1 - 0  MUCKAMORE   [Agg:  1 - 1, Byron win on pens]
At this stage of a tournament it's absolutely heart-wrenching to see a team going out on penalties. In fact, in truth we don't like doing it - but as is the case with such instances, one team has to go! Muckamore will be gutted, Byron Park relieved. Cue to inevitable debate about penalties being used....

NFC CRAWFORD  0 - 0  SPORTING CLUB COMBER   [Agg: 2 - 3]
Great we can use that SClub joke again (oh, so that's a joke is it? Ed). On the face of it, a great result for Comber - however Crawford did spend nearly 80 minutes of the game playing with a man-short. Unlucky for Crawford, they exited the competition at the Quarter Finals last year. So it's SClub who are partying, and all together - there ain't no party like an SClub Partaaaay! (Groan - Ed)

QUARTER FINAL, 1st Legs

M.O.D ATHLETIC  1-1  GOLDEN BOYS
Two managers who know each other well and a draw was an expected result here, although the Golden Boys will argue they had the better of the game. They took the lead early on through Zanetti, but allowed the home side to sneak a 1-1 draw, Nelson scoring an important equalizer. Mod have their work cut-out for the 2nd leg, Golden Boys have been magnificent at home.

TUDOR UNITED  2-0  EXTRUSIONEERS
Some have already labeled P8's Extrusioneers as this season's Champions League winners to be, However Tudor have never been one for respecting reputations. The P31 outfit are fast becoming the most dangerous team to play domestically and in Europe, and two late goals by Tek Dat have given Extrusioneers something to think about for the 2nd leg.

MUCKAMORE  1-0  BYRON PARK FC
Ian Latimer has been determined to prove the doubters wrong in this seasons' Champions League - his P1 outfit have already disposed of the elite teams from P21 and P28 and threatened to do the same to Byron Park until Carson was sent off with 10 minutes to go. A single goal by N Ainger is all that they take into the 2nd leg - it could be enough.

SPORTING CLUB COMBER  3-2  NFC CRAWFORD
The final game produced a five goal thriller as SCC met NFC at Almond Square! Mavour grabbed the first two goals for the home side, the first coming on only 2 minutes. Church added another but only after Crawford pulled their way back into the tie through Graham and Miles - they looked dead and buried up until then. You get the feeling that the 2nd leg will be a similar story - we could be in for another great game.

3RD ROUND, 2nd Legs

BURGH ROVERS 1-1 MOD ATHLETIC  [Agg: 1-3]
This game exploded into life in the second half, unfortunately for Burgh Rovers, MOD were already one-nil up through G Waldock! With the away goal secured, MOD could afford to concede a late goal from Al Longwood. Burgh Rovers exit the competition then, but they've given us some great memories - particularly the shock win over Chatham Town!

GOLDEN BOYS 3-0 SWANSCOMBE UTD  [Agg: 4-0]
Four goals without reply for P11's Golden Boys, and they are looking a very strong contender indeed! In truth, they were never troubled by Swanscombe, the P3 outfit were totally outplayed in both games. Goals from Rebe Stamos, Clive Evans and Les Toppling gave Jason Bisley a memorable and well deserved victory.

STEMPSON PARK 1-2 TUDOR UNITED  [Agg: 1-6]
Trust Tudor to rub the salt in the wounds! They could have, and maybe should have defended their healthy first leg lead - but instead continued with their winning formula of aggressive attacking and ended up winning an exciting match at Court Lane with goals from Tek Dat and Robert Price. Stempson's consolation was scored by Robert Price.

EXTRUSIONEERS 4-0 ANFIELD ROAD RANGRS  [Agg: 5-0]
Anfield Road completed a hat-trick of misery for P2 after receiving a thumping against Extrusioneers. R Garnett, Jim Ray Dandy, Bill Mays and Drifter Davis scored in a game which ended with two nasty incidents that saw Hacker Jones (Ext) sent off and Mark Sellick (ARR) was lucky to escape a red card after elbowing Mealie Joe.

NEWLYN EAST RANGERS 1-1 MUCKAMORE  [Agg: 3-5]
An early goal by A Parr was the perfect start for Newlyn, but they failed to capitalize and their former P28 rivals were let off the hook, scoring an equalizer in the 83rd minute from Trevor Nunn. The game was end to end, with Muckamore in truth just shading things - but after such a good start Rangers will be kicking themselves!

BYRON PARK 2-0 CASCARINO'S GUNNERS  [Agg: 7-1]
After such an overwhelming and, it has to be said, baffling first leg lead Byron could afford to take it easy....not a bit of it. Manager Richard French demands the best from his team, and they didn't disappoint, scoring goals from S Swanson and Ivan Popov. Gunners manager Richard Smith will now have to concentrate on the Euro Champions League with Parma.

SPORTING CLUB COMBER 2-0 WIBSEY RAVERS  [Agg: 4-1]
Neal Comber is having an SCLUB party (sorry couldn't resist!) after finishing off Wibsey Ravers from P56 in a game of little chances, despite the quality of players on show! The all important goals were put away by Jason Church and Matthew Ace, but this game won't live long in the memory!

TYNESIDE FC 0-2 NFC CRAWFORD  [Agg: 1-2]
Comeback of the day, in fact - the only comeback of the day, came at Burnage Lane as NFC Crawford clawed back a 1st leg deficit to sneak into the last eight. Crawford reverted back to a more familiar tactic to win this one, with goals from Ian Fletcher and Adam Lunn.
